The 75th Birthday of Her Majesty The Titular Queen of Romania

Born on March 26, 1949 as Princess Margarita of Romania, Princess of Hohenzollern, Her Majesty is the first daughter of King Michael I of Romania and his wife, Princess Anne of Bourbon-Parma. Born in exile after her father's forced and illegal abdication, she spent the early part of her life in the United Kingdom and Switzerland. Like her four younger sisters, Margarita was baptized in the Eastern Orthodox faith. She studied at the University of Edinburgh and worked in various United Nations agencies. She later gave up this career to dedicate herself to charitable work in Romania, where she could enter immediately after the Romanian Revolution of 1989 (in comparison to her father, who faced difficulties from the authorities until 1997). In her charitable activities, she met Radu Duda, whom she married in Switzerland in 1996.

Following a paradigm shift in relations between the former sovereign and Romanian authorities, King Michael I supported a European tour in support of Romania's accession to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. During these years, Margarita emerged as her father's successor, assisting him in numerous representative activities and undertaking many others on her own or alongside her husband. Between 2015 and 2023, Margarita has been the President of the Romanian Red Cross.
